FAQ Guide

Do I need to bring anything to a smog check in California?

Short answer: the only thing you truly need is the vehicle. California smog stations can look your car up electronically by license plate or VIN, so even if you show up empty-handed, we can almost always run the test. That said, a few items make the visit faster—and a few preparation steps make the difference between passing on the first try and paying for a retest. Here's the complete checklist.

Helpful to Bring (But Not Required)

  • Your DMV renewal notice. It tells us exactly what the DMV wants—including whether your vehicle was directed to a STAR station. We can look this up without it, but having it in hand saves a minute.
  • Your current registration card. Same story: useful, not mandatory.
  • A form of payment. We accept cards and cash.
  • A coupon. Ours is a free download on our coupons page—grab it before you leave the house.

Special Situations That Need Paperwork

  • Selling your car? Nothing extra is needed for the test itself—the certificate transmits to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days. Our guide to smog checks when buying or selling covers the rest of the transfer process.
  • Out-of-state vehicle? Bring your out-of-state title or registration so we can enter the vehicle correctly for its first California registration. New to the area? Start with our out-of-state registration guide—there's a 20-day deadline.

What You Don't Need

Proof of insurance isn't part of the smog inspection, and while a photo ID never hurts, it isn't required to test the vehicle—the inspection is about the car, not the driver. You also don't need an appointment at our station: walk-ins are welcome.

How to Prepare the Car Itself (This Is the Part That Matters)

What you bring matters less than what shape the car arrives in:

  • Arrive with a warm engine. Drive for 15–20 minutes before your test so the engine and catalytic converter are at full operating temperature—a cold system tests worse.
  • Don't clear trouble codes or replace the battery right before the test. Your car's onboard readiness monitors reset when power is cut, and unset monitors mean an incomplete test. If you've just had battery work done, drive normally for several days first.
  • Make sure the gas cap seals properly. A worn or loose cap is one of the cheapest, most common reasons for a failed evaporative check.
  • Don't come in with the check engine light on. It's an automatic fail on OBD-equipped vehicles—address the underlying issue first, and see what happens if your car fails for the repair-assistance options.

How Long Will It Take?

At Lake Smog Test Only, the inspection itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes once we begin. Results go to the DMV electronically the same day, so most drivers can complete their registration renewal online that evening. If you have any doubt about what your particular situation requires, call us at (626) 798-0049—we'll tell you in under a minute.
