How Much Does a Smog Check Cost in California? (2026 Guide)
It's the first question everyone asks—and the honest answer is that there is no single statewide price. California deliberately lets each licensed station set its own inspection fee, which is why the quote you get in one ZIP code can differ from the one a few miles away. Here's how smog check pricing actually works in 2026, which fees are fixed by the state, and how to keep your total as low as possible.
Why Prices Vary: The State Doesn't Regulate Them
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), which runs the Smog Check Program, does not regulate inspection prices. Each station sets its own fee, and BAR's own advice to consumers is that “shopping around can help you find the best price.” Two consumer protections do apply everywhere:
- The station must give you an estimate, and you must authorize it before the inspection begins
- The station must charge the state-mandated $8.25 smog check certificate fee (set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair)—this is separate from the inspection fee and covers the electronic certificate sent to the DMV when you pass
So your total is always: the station's inspection fee + $8.25 certificate fee.
What Makes One Smog Check Cost More Than Another?
- Your vehicle. Older vehicles (model year 1999 and earlier) require a tailpipe/dynamometer test that takes more equipment and time than the OBD-II plug-in test used for 2000-and-newer cars. Diesels, RVs, and motorhomes often cost more for the same reason.
- Your location. Rent and labor costs differ across California, and so do inspection fees.
- Station type. Test-only, test-and-repair, and STAR stations price independently. A STAR certification is about inspection quality standards—it does not mean a more expensive or stricter test.
- Coupons and timing. Many stations, ours included, offer coupons that meaningfully cut the price.
DMV Smog Fees People Mix Up with the Inspection
Two fees on DMV paperwork routinely get confused with the smog check itself:
- Smog abatement fee — $20 or $25. Paid at registration by owners of newer vehicles that are exempt from biennial testing: $20 a year while the vehicle is six or fewer model-years old, and $25 for the seventh and eighth years (Health & Safety Code §44060). If you're paying this, you're not getting a smog check that year.
- Smog transfer fee — $8. Paid to the DMV by the buyer when a gasoline vehicle four or fewer model years old changes ownership instead of a smog inspection. Our guide to buying and selling a car in California covers this in detail.
The Real Cost Risk: Failing the Test
The inspection fee is the small number. The expensive scenario is failing and needing repairs—so it pays to show up ready: drive 15–20 minutes beforehand so the engine is warm, and don't clear trouble codes or disconnect the battery right before your test (your car's readiness monitors need drive time to reset, and unset monitors mean an incomplete test). If your dashboard light is already on, read our guide to smog checks with the check engine light on before booking anything.
If your car does fail, California has real help available through BAR's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP):
- Repair assistance: income-eligible owners may qualify for up to $1,450 toward emissions repairs on model year 1996 and newer vehicles, or up to $1,100 for 1976–1995 vehicles (with a co-payment)
- Vehicle retirement: from $1,350 (no income requirement, vehicle failed its last test) up to $1,500–$2,000 for income-eligible owners

How to Pay Less for Your Smog Check
- Use a coupon. It's the easiest discount there is—ours is right here.
- Compare a couple of nearby stations. BAR encourages it, and reputable stations will quote you over the phone.
- Go test-only if you just need the certificate. Test-only stations like ours don't sell repairs, so there's no incentive to find problems that aren't there.
- Pass the first time. A warm engine and healthy battery are free; a retest isn't always.
