California Smog Emissions Testing Process

​In California, emissions testing is part of the state's efforts to reduce air pollution. Here’s an overview of the triggers and process:
Triggers for Emissions Testing

1. Vehicle Age and Type:
   • Smog Check: Generally required for gasoline-powered vehicles older than 1975 and diesel-powered vehicles older than 1997. Newer vehicles (typically those 6 years old or newer) are exempt from testing.
   • Hybrid Vehicles: Must undergo a smog check after the first 6 years.
2. Change of Ownership:
   • Emissions testing is required when a vehicle is sold or transferred unless it's exempt due to age or type.
3. Registration Renewal:
   • Vehicles must have a valid smog check when renewing registration if they are not exempt.
4. Out-of-State Vehicles:
   • If you bring a vehicle into California from another state, it usually needs to pass a smog check.
